Going into this project I had a few ideas that I was playing around with

initially i wanted to do something with “voodoo people” by the prodigy, the main lead in that track gave me a lot of ideas, after recreating the main lead of the song in xfer serum using techniques that we learned in class and getting a basic drum groove going i got at a bit of a loss and hit a dead end.

after this i wanted to try and make something in the style of producer “hamdi” his tracks such as “counting” and “skanka” have really been taking over the dubstep scene at the minute and after trying to capture his style i found myself not knowing where to go

after a lot of experimentation i finally settled on sampling the iconic grime track “one take” by rude kid

i wanted to make a sort of fusion between drill, dubstep and grime

i decided i wanted to make the one take sample more modern and incorporate a drill drum pattern and uk dubstep inspired bass sounds

the drum groove took a fair while to put together but i think it came out pretty successfully

in fl studio, there are several ways that you can arrange your drums, I prefer to do it in the main arrangement view because I feel it gives me the most control over the different parameters of the sounds

the hi-hats are a classic “2-2-1” drill pattern and the kick and the clap play a standard dubstep pattern

to make the different bass sounds i tried to employ some of the different techniques that we learned in class

this is the serum patch i used for the dubstep wobble heard in the track

to make this i did follow some guides to make the basic sound and then adjusted the different parameters to my personal preference

this is the sub that i made completely from scratch, all it is, is 2 oscillators, osc A taken down by 2 octaves and osc B taken down by 1 octave and the envelopes and lfos were adjusted to taste

the main issue with the track in my opinion is the mix, unfortunately, i came to this way to late and wasn’t able to get it anywhere near where i wanted it,

the only thing I was able to get done was basic level adjustments and a limiter on the master just to make sure that nothing was clipping and that it was listenable.

although I wasn’t able to do much in terms of mixing i still feel that the final product was not too bad sonically

reflection

overall I think my project went very successfully in terms of the practical and the finished product but there are some things i still definitely need to work on

  • time management
  • remembering to blog
  • writing skills
  • more in depth showing of my working
  • do not leave anything until the last minute

some things i am happy with

  • final product
  • artist statement
